In short

What is dental re-treatment?

Dental re-treatment means finding out why earlier dental work has failed and putting it right: repeating a root canal (re-RCT), fixing back or remaking a crown or bridge, treating a problem around an implant, or relining a loose denture. At Smile Gallery Dental Wellness Centre in Arera Colony, Bhopal, MDS prosthodontists check the tooth with digital X-rays first, then give you the plan and the cost in writing before anything starts.

  • Problems can appear late. A root-canal-treated tooth can develop new problems months or even years after treatment. (American Association of Endodontists)
  • Re-treatment often works. In a widely cited review of 17 studies, about three in four re-treated root canals healed completely on X-ray. (Ng et al., 2008)
  • Implant failure is uncommon. Large reviews put dental implant survival at 10 years at about 93–96%. (Howe et al., 2019)

What you might be feeling

It is normal to be worried this time.

When a treatment has not worked, coming back to a dental chair takes courage. These are the fears we hear most, and what we do about each one.

When to get it checked

Signs your old dental work needs a second look

Problems can show up weeks after treatment, or years later. These are all worth a check.

Root canal: A root-canal-treated tooth

  • Pain that stays, or comes back months or years later
  • Pain when you bite
  • Swelling, or a small pimple on the gum
  • A bad taste or smell
  • The tooth turning darker

Crown or bridge: A cap or a bridge

  • It comes off, or keeps coming off
  • Food gets stuck under it
  • The gum bleeds or looks dark around it
  • A bad smell from under it
  • It feels high when you bite

Filling: A filling

  • It fell out, or a piece broke off
  • A sharp edge you feel with your tongue
  • Sensitivity to cold or sweets
  • The tooth looks black inside

Dental implant: An implant tooth

  • It feels loose
  • Pain or swelling around it
  • The gum bleeds, or there is pus
  • Food packs in around it

Denture: A denture

  • Loose when you eat or talk
  • Sore spots on the gums
  • It clicks, or falls when you speak
  • Chewing has become hard

Sometimes there is no pain at all and the problem shows only on an X-ray. If something doesn’t feel right, a check-up with a digital X-ray gives you a clear answer.

If you have been chewing on one side for months, or living on painkillers, you do not have to any more.

Putting it right

What re-treatment can involve

It depends on what we find. You hear every option, and why, before anything starts.

  1. Re-RCT: A repeat root canal

Illustrative picture: a dentist holding an X-ray of a root-canal-treated molar

The old filling inside the tooth is taken out, the canals are cleaned again, including any that were missed, and then sealed. It often takes more than one sitting, and the tooth usually needs a crown afterwards to protect it.

    About root canal treatment
  2. Crowns and bridges: Fixed back, or made new

Illustrative picture: a ceramic dental crown held in tweezers beside an intraoral scanner

If the tooth underneath is sound, the same crown can often be fixed back. If not, we treat the tooth first and make a new crown or bridge that fits properly, measured with an intraoral scanner.

What decides the cost of a crown
  3. Implants: Tightened, treated or replaced

Illustrative picture: a model of a dental implant with a crown on top

A loose crown or screw on top can usually be tightened or replaced. Gum infection around an implant is cleaned and treated. If an implant has truly failed, it is removed and a new one is placed once the area heals, with our visiting oral surgeon when surgery is needed.

    About dental implants
  4. Dentures: Relined, or remade

Illustrative picture: a natural-looking full denture resting on a soft cloth

A loose denture can often be relined so it grips your gums again. If it is old or worn, we make a new one, or talk you through implants that hold a denture firmly in place.

    About dentures
  5. Straight talk: When a tooth can’t be saved

We tell you honestly, and show you the best way to replace it: an implant, a bridge or a denture. You get the plan and the cost in writing, and you decide.

Compare your options

Repeat root canal, or take the tooth out?

When a root canal fails, there are usually three paths. Saving your own tooth comes first whenever it is healthy enough.

Repeat root canal compared with extraction and an implant, and extraction and a bridge
Repeat root canal (re-RCT)Extraction + implantExtraction + bridge
Keeps your own toothYesNoNo
Surgery neededNoYes, to place the implantNo
Teeth next to itNot touchedNot touchedShaped to hold the bridge
Usual time to finishA few sittings, then a crownA few months, while the implant heals into the boneA few sittings
Best whenThe root and the bone around it are healthy enough to saveThe tooth can’t be saved and there is enough boneThe tooth can’t be saved and the teeth beside it need crowns anyway
Swipe the table sideways to see all three options.

Which is right depends on your tooth. We show you the X-ray, explain each option in plain words, and you decide.

Questions people ask about re-treatment

Straight answers about failed root canals, loose crowns, implants and dentures. Anything else, message us on WhatsApp.

What are the signs of a failed root canal?

Pain that stays or comes back, pain when you bite, swelling or a small pimple on the gum near the tooth, a bad taste, or the tooth turning dark. Sometimes there is no pain at all and the problem shows only on an X-ray, so a check with a digital X-ray gives a clear answer.

Is pain after a root canal normal?

Mild soreness for a few days after a root canal sitting is common, and it usually settles with the medicine the dentist suggests. Pain that gets worse, lasts beyond a week or two, or comes with swelling is not normal and should be checked, even if the treatment was finished.

Can a root canal be done again on the same tooth?

Yes, often. A repeat root canal, called re-RCT or retreatment, removes the old filling inside the tooth, cleans the canals again, including any that were missed, and seals them. Whether it can save your tooth depends on what the X-ray shows, and we tell you that honestly first.

What is the success rate of root canal re-treatment?

In a widely cited review of 17 studies, about three in four re-treated root canals healed completely on X-ray (Ng and colleagues, International Endodontic Journal, 2008). Your own chances depend on the tooth, the cause of the failure and the bone around the root, which we check before advising you.

Why can a root canal fail after many years?

A root canal can fail years later if new decay reaches the root filling, an old crown or filling leaks and lets bacteria in, the tooth cracks, or a canal was left untreated. That is why a crown over the tooth and regular check-ups matter after a root canal.

Is it better to redo a root canal or get an implant?

If the root and the bone around it are healthy enough, saving your own tooth with a repeat root canal usually comes first: there is no surgery and nothing is removed. If the tooth cannot be saved, an implant or a bridge replaces it. We show you the X-ray and explain each option.

How much does re-treatment cost?

It depends on the tooth, how much needs to be redone, and whether you need a new crown. After the check-up and X-ray, we give you the plan and the exact cost in writing before anything starts, so there are no surprises. EMI is available on implants.

My crown fell off and the tooth looks black. What should I do?

Keep the crown safe, avoid chewing on that side, and come in soon. A dark tooth under a crown often means decay, or a tooth that had a root canal earlier. We check it with an X-ray, treat the tooth if needed, then fix the crown back or make a new one that fits.

Can a failed dental implant be replaced?

Often, yes. First we check whether only the crown or screw on top is loose, which is a simple fix. If the implant itself has failed, it is removed, the area is allowed to heal, and a new implant can usually be placed later. Our visiting oral surgeon joins when surgery is needed.

My denture is loose when I eat. Can it be fixed?

Usually, yes. Gums and bone change shape over the years, so a denture that once fitted well can become loose. It can often be relined to fit again. If it is old or worn, a new denture, or one held in place by implants, will feel much firmer.

Can I come only for a second opinion?

Yes. You can come only for an opinion. We examine the tooth, explain what we find and what your options are, and give you the plan and the cost in writing. You take it home and decide. Starting treatment is always your choice.

Can I send my X-rays on WhatsApp first?

Yes. Send your old X-rays and reports on WhatsApp to +91 92007 00750 before your visit, so the doctor can see your history. The full answer comes after we examine the tooth, because an X-ray alone does not show everything.

Where can I get a second opinion for a failed root canal in Bhopal?

Aapke sawal, Hinglish mein

RCT ke baad dard ho to kya kare?

RCT ke baad do-teen din halka dard ya sensitivity normal hai, aur doctor ki batayi dawai se theek ho jaata hai. Agar dard badhta jaye, ek-do hafte se zyada rahe, ya sujan aa jaye, to daant ka X-ray karwa kar check karwana zaroori hai. Hum digital X-ray se wajah dhoondte hain.

RCT fail ho jaye to kya kare?

Ghabraiye nahi. Kai baar root canal dobara (re-RCT) karke daant bachaya ja sakta hai. Pehle X-ray se wajah dekhte hain, phir aapko saaf bataate hain ki daant bach sakta hai ya nahi, aur plan aur kharcha likhit mein dete hain.

Cap (crown) nikal gaya to kya kare?

Cap ko sambhal kar rakhiye, us taraf se mat chabaiye aur jaldi dikhaiye. Agar neeche ka daant theek hai to wahi cap dobara lag sakta hai. Nahi to pehle daant ka ilaj karke naya cap banaya jaata hai.
